The Fourth of July is the celebration of the birth of a nation. It’s about so many things- fighting for your social/political beliefs, and the freedom to practice your own religion as you see fit. Americans have enjoyed this luxury since 1776, so it can be very difficult for us to imagine what it’s like not having those basic rights which seem so fundamental to us.
But it’s so important for us to remember that while our ancestors fought so bravely and died for their convictions so we could have these freedoms, there are people TODAY, who are engaged in that very same bitter fight.
In countries such as Syria, Iran, China and many others throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa- these basic rights are DENIED. They must either choose to stay and practice their faith in complete secrecy or stay and fight politically or physically with weapons of war and risk being tortured, sent to prison or even executed for their beliefs. And there are others still, refugees who flee their beloved homelands in order to travel to strange and foreign lands to practice their religion of choice- just as the Pilgrims traveled to America so long ago and faced the terrors of an unknown continent just to be able to worship their Lord and Savior.
Let us not take for granted what a precious gift our Forefathers bestowed upon us, but let us honor their memory by helping modern day freedom fighters all over the world, who are also trying to give their children, family and friends access to these same privileges and freedoms. We can support refugees financially, physically and emotionally in their struggle to find a safe place for them to practice whatever religion they so choose. Remember these brave and courageous Freedom Fighters as we celebrate this momentous holiday.
